Demonstration and artistic intervention
for the preservation of the Marlene Poelzig House
in front of the “Haus Marlene Poelzig” - Tannenbergallee 28, 14055 Berlin
June 18, 2021, 4 - 6 p.m.
In cooperation with the initiative “Haus Marlene Poelzig”
Background:
The Poelzig family home and studio in Berlin-Westend was built in 1930 according to a design by sculptor and architect Marlene Poelzig. Her husband was the renowned architect Hans Poelzig. The house is an outstanding example of modernist architecture and of the emancipation of female architects in the early 20th century.
In summer 2020, a petition called for the preservation and monument protection of the building, which was in constant decline and threatened with demolition, and almost 5,000 signatures were collected. Since then, an initiative of citizens, building culture experts and interested parties has been working to preserve the building and to recognize the architect's life's work - representative of the many underappreciated biographies of female architects and master builders.
On June 18, as part of the Women in Architecture Festival 2021, the Marlene Poelzig Initiative invites you to a demonstration on site. In front of the house, members of the initiative will give impulses on Marlene Poelzig, the history of the house, planned events and the planned residency program. As an artistic intervention, a specially created work by artist Hannah Cooke will be unveiled to honor Marlene Poelzig.
Come along and join in the demonstration!
Cold drinks will be provided.
